The Wave

June 2, 2010

Summer has begun around these parts(doing happy dance complete with baton twirling) and I’ve been kind of MIA.  Sorry, just settling into this wonderful time of year!  My favorite.  I’ve burned the calendars and thrown out the alarms!  Not that they were doing me much good anyway, they don’t work if you forget to pay attention.

I am up before the boys this morning and wanted to join Arizona Mamma’s great meme.

This week, it’s hit home to me that I am the adult in this crowd.  For better or for worse.

I think my oldest makes a much better adult, but he’s 11 and is just not ready to have that torch handed to him yet.

So, here I am.  The MOM.

You know you’re a mom when your bathing suit has a skirt.  Heaven help me.  It’s a public service.  Nobody wants to see me bent over digging on the beach without a  little extra fabric.

And you know you’re a mom when you’ve perfected “The Wave.”  And I don’t mean the one that you do when you pass a cute boy on the beach in your “pre-skirted-tankini days.”  No ma’am, this is not a bikini wearing wave.  (You may do this one in a bikini if you are genetically blessed or work out really hard, and if that is the case, pull your beach chair waaaay north of me)

This wave, the mama wave, is the one you do, mostly from your beach chair.  It’s the one that tells the kids they are out too deep.  The one that alerts them that they need to come in a little, or they’ll be in time out.  It’s often accompanied with a three count.  And for emphasis,  a little, “I’m getting out of this chair” posturing.

The “wave” also works for “come back this way,”  when the current is pulling them and they’d end up  blocks from where they started, if you were not waving.

Then there’s the wave and point.  It signals that if they don’t move, that old geezer on the boogie board(who is currently experiencing child blindness) is going to run their little five year old self right over.

I hope in the next few days, the water will warm up enough for me to do more playing and less waving.  But, for now, I’m the old lady in the skirted tankini making wild hand gestures and slathering sun screen on squirmy children.

Waving in a skirt.  It’s how I know I’m a mom.

Have a great summer!

Oh, my gosh! I want to be at the beach! I live in Utah. Thanks a lot. 🙂

LOL I’ve SOOO done the “posturing” to get out of a chair thing!! So stinkin’ funny. And sadly, I too live in Utah and am far, far away from any beach with ocean attached to it! I’m just a tiny bit jealous!

LOL!!! This is a good one!

You’re the best, LL! Cracks me up that you tell the skinny one to park her chair well north of you. Never fear, I’d be sitting right next to you in my new tankini. First I’ve ever owned. Sigh.

HA, HA, HA! I choked on my food when I read “Nobody wants to see me bent over digging on the beach without a little extra fabric.”

You are the greatest! And I know what you mean about the wave.

I LOVE this post! I laughed the whole time. Oh my the wave. I do that even when we aren’t near water. I also do the “getting out of the chair posturing” to drive the point home.

Too funny. I feel like I’m MIA too. Summer is my most favorite time of year, and just the thougtht of not setting that alarm puts a smile on my face. Enjoy your summer LL, I know we’ll catch each other here and there often.

Hey…if it’s a short skirt..then it’s still sexy..right?? 😉 I actaully caved last year and bought a skirted tankini. I actually kind of dig it…no more worries about straggling you know what’s! he he

You crack me up. I can just imagine you there on the beach, with your bag full of gestures!! I want to come and join you. Sounds lovely. I’m the queen of gesturing!!! I’ve got some pretty great facial gestures too!! It’s amazing what you can communicate without using words!

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

I do the snap and point the finger. The snap means that i mean business. My snap can be heard over all sorts of laughter and screams. And sometimes I growl out loud, then they know I am really upset.

You are too funny! I haven’t done the skirt yet, but I just might. I usually do the buy a one piece suit and put board shorts on.

Ah, so true. I know that wave well and since I hate to go in the water, I do it a lot. My kids are past the age of me needing to do the wave. Matter of fact, my youngest teaches in the Junior Lifeguard Program. I have 5 grandkids though and their favorite thing is to come visit me down the beach. So you see, I am back doing the wave once again! I love your blog by the way.

Too funny! I can relate, but part of my “wave” also now involves some flexing of my arms, so that the part underneath doesn’t wave! This is a new problem….don’t know how it happened, but it snuck up on me!

Love your blog, came over from blogfrog!
