The Creature Within

July 1, 2010

As I type this, my toes are curled up tight.  Because, that’s what I do when I’m especially skeeved out. Curl my toes.

Remember when I took my boys kayaking a couple of weeks ago?

And do you remember that we found this?  Out of the plethora of shells to choose from, this one came home with us.

Well, my boys can be sort of…..imaginative.  And there are times that I think they are making something out of nothing, just to jerk me around.

I totally ignored my oldest when he mentioned that the bag of shells seemed to be making noise.  How could he tell? We’re in a hotel room with three boys, there’s nothing but noise.

And once again, I ignored the yelping coming out of his bedroom as he and his brothers told me there were legs coming out of his whelk shell.  Probably just want to mess with me.  That’s what these mini tormenters do sometimes.  And if there was something there, it was probably a spider or something.  No biggie.

Finally, Sam comes walking out with this horrifying site.

A site that wouldn’t have bothered me in the least had I been in his home.  But, that completely sent me over the edge considering it was in my own dining room. (I apologize for the picture quality, my hands were shaking too much to get a good picture. And, I didn’t want to get to close,  I kept expecting the thing to run across the floor at me.)

And Sam, smelling weakness, knew I was horrified.

So, what does he do? Chases me with the bleeping thing.  I ran, slammed doors, climbed furniture, only to have my miniature tormentor chase me, laughing maniacally.

Who are these people I’m raising?

But, in the end, it was dead.  And I am sorry.  I wish that it could have lived out it’s natural life on the banks of Shem Creek.

But, I will admit, I’m glad it wasn’t alive that night.  The night of the chase.   Being chased with a dead crustacean is bad enough.  I don’t think I could have survived a live one.  Not with legs clicking and moving.

And if admitting this is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

I need to quit thinking about this now, my curled toes are causing my feet to cramp.

But, let this be a lesson to you.  Those hermit crabs will hide!  Be careful about the souvenirs your kids bring home.

Ugh! Just think – it might have been alive and you’d bring it home and it would escape in the night…AND then you’d be laying peacefully slumbering in your bed and it would crawl into your sheets and ….SHUDDER. I really don’t like animals. I’m freaked out by them.

Or what if it had escaped in the car and crawled over to my foot and caused me to wreck. I’m imagining bigger tragedies than the death of that nasty bug!

Oh, big, loud, YUCK! I would have been freaking too and my beautiful vegetarian animal loving daughter would have been crying trying to save the thing. Oh,my,what a plethora of screams that must have been echoing from your home.

Glad it’s over for you, hope your little toes are all back to normal!

What is Sam’s full name? Because this behavior warrants a scolding that includes first, middle and last names!

    You poor, poor thing, LL!

I’m glad I had my feet up off the floor when I read this!

That’s the first thing I always tell the kids (and my husband) whenever they pick up something that they could chase me with: “If you wave that thing at me, chase me around or any other thing to make me scream, I will SO get you when you are least expecting it!”

    Works every time! : )

And I curl my toes (and my feet if I could) whenever I see just pictures of snakes!

Ugh!! Ugh again! Love to see those things at the aquarium or pet store, would NOT want to find one creeping out into my living room to stalk the family!

Ugh…it made my skin crawl just to see that picture! I had to laugh, though, at you getting chased by your own son with it!

Yuck. We had a similar experience in Florida recently. My son found a big shell and was planning to bring it home. Luckily, he noticed there was something living in it before we got too far. *shudder*
