Shark Week Booty

July 23, 2010
I haven’t fallen off the earth! I’ve been out playing with my husband and some friends for the last couple of days, that coupled with a some computer problems and I’ve been out of the loop.  I’ve missed you!
If you don’t know about our unexpected shark encounter, check it out first. You need the back story for this to make a lick of sense!  Go ahead and click on it, it’ll open in another window.

After my husband and son were terrorized by a 19 foot great white shark(or actually, accidentally swam with what was probably a nurse shark the size of a first grader) I, of course, did the obvious thing. I blogged about it. I then tweeted about it.  And within an hour received an email from a publicist for the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. He wanted to send us a press kit.  I was pretty sure talking to our country butts on camera was not a good idea.  The south gets enough bad press without my accent making things worse.

I had no idea what a press kit was, but gave him our address and within a couple of days we got this really cool box.

A shark swam under my surfboard and towards my first-born, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.  It’s actually not a lousy t-shirt at all, it’s really soft and well made!

They also sent 2010 Shark Week DVDs.

Sharks by nature just look scary, but these videos actually made you feel better about swimming with them.

The Discovery Channel donated money on our behalf to Oceana.  They’re “the world’s largest international conservation organization focused on protecting and restoring the world’s oceans.”  That was the coolest part.

Adam is now the owner of a virtual shark named Fineas. Looks fierce, doesn’t he?

So, here’s what I’m wondering. If you get all this cool stuff just for getting close to one. What prizes do you get if it takes a nibble?  Not at all interested in finding out personally, just curious.

I don’t know why we’re so surprised when we see a shark.  We’re the ones playing in their backyard.

People swim every day. Lots of people. And you only hear of a shark bite very rarely. And then, it’s not generally an attack, once they get a taste, they usually realize “human” is not their flavor and they back off. So, I’m convinced they don’t want us. And after Adam and Wayne were that close to a shark and it did nothing, I’m even more convinced that they’re nothing to worry about.

I know tons of people who have been in car accidents, and yet I get in a car every day and don’t give it a second thought.

I know not a single soul who’s ever been bitten by a shark. And even if I did, I’d still get in the ocean. There’s just not enough risk to make it a valid fear.

I’m too busy freaking out about mice, a clear and present danger.

We did stay out of the water for a few days.

Logically, I knew it was no big deal.  I am a mother though.  And that feeling in the pit of my stomach needed to catch up with what I knew in my head.

After a few days, reason won out over emotion and we were back to the beach. I’m not worried, but I have to admit, I spend just a little more time looking for fins!

Have a great day!  I’ve got lots of catching up to do!

Girl, we’ve missed you! Glad you’re back! Those last few pictures are awesome. Love them. The shark press kit cracks me up. I can’t believe they contacted you. How funny!

I got a kick out of it too! I’m really glad to be back, I feel like I’ve missed so much!

I must just be a worrier by nature and never have realized it until I had kids. I freak just looking at the pictures of your kids out there. I think about sharks, I think about undertows, I think about jelly fish. Heck, what don’t I think about? I will have to do some serious self-checking when my kids are older.

Maybe part of it is where I live too. I mean, I don’t live near the ocean, so it is that much more mysterious. Here, we had a rattlesnake on our front porch, and that doesn’t bother me a bit. Yeah…that must be it. Or at least that is what I will tell myself.

Okay, the very idea of rattlesnakes freaks me out! And I bet you have those scary scorpions too, don’t you? See, I’d freak!
I was born before Christmas and have pictures of my dad putting me in the ocean that Easter, even though it was kind of cold. I’ve been in it so much that it just doesn’t scare me. Like the snakes not freaking you out!

That press kit had a lot of awesome things in it – how great that you got to save “Fineas.” Anyway, glad you’re back online, and back in the water as well. Have a great weekend!

That is one awesome press kit! Cool that they sent you something just for floating by.

I totally want to see what they would send if you actually got nibbled on!! So are you gonna go out, pick off a scab, and bleed into the water just to see??? Because I think that tweet would get you TONS of attention. hahahaha

In all seriousness…I’m still thankful no one got nibbled on and I think it’s pretty cool you got “shark booty” for your troubles!!

I’m planning on cutting my husband. He stands a better chance of surviving than me. I’m slow.

  6. July 23, 2010 8:46 pm

That is so cool that you got a press kit!

  7. July 23, 2010 9:04 pm

A shark press kit is kinda fun. The power of Twitter at work.
What scares me about the ocean or lakes is that I can’t see what might be lurky there. I like to see the bottom and what might be coming at me. And with the kids I am terrified that if one of them went down I would never find them.
So those are my open water fears.

  8. July 23, 2010 10:06 pm

I was wondering how Discovery got wind of this. Twitter! Of course! Pretty cool that you got some stuff out of it, though. And you’re so right about having to get back in the water. Chances of a shark attack are slim. So I’ve read. I don’t have much personal experience with that as I live in a desert. The scariest thing that ever happened to me at a vacation on the beach was the top of my bathing suit coming off as I jumped out of the water.

  9. July 23, 2010 11:16 pm

Haha! That is SO cool!! I do wonder what you would get were you bitten….hmmm…lol I when you said, “….that feeling in the pit of my stomach needed to catch up with what I knew in my head.” I have felt that way so many times, and that was the perfect way to verbalize what I was thinking. Also love what you said about the press and southern accents. SO TRUE! {Now I’m curious as to how strong your accent is! lol} Have you vlogged? You must now! I am always told when I go out of town how southern I sound. Of course I don’t hear it. 🙂

That is so incredibly cool that they sent you a press kit! I mean, really, did you ever expect that?!?

You have me cracking up wondering what you get if they take a nibble though! 🙂

  11. July 24, 2010 9:22 am

I’m glad you’re convinced! I don’t think I could get back so soon after that happening, it would totally freak me out.

Your comment about the quality of the t-shirt cracked me up!

  12. July 24, 2010 9:50 am

Very cool press kit. But even better is the story that you guys get to tell. Your son will have the most awesome “What I did over the summer” story of all the kids in his class!

I’m a wimp. Sharks scare me, so do big snakes, and bears, and mountain lions. But you’re right… I still do swim in the ocean and go hiking. We can’t go through life cowering in fear.

  13. July 24, 2010 8:59 pm

Those are some cool goodies! I find that incredible that Discovery Channel contacted you so fast. Maybe I should blog about the time my husband got nibbled to answer your question? 😉 Oh, and don’t let that freak you out — it was just a baby nurse that temporarily attached itself to his ankle. No damage done!

  14. July 24, 2010 11:08 pm

Wow, cool booty!! I had no idea there was a prize package with such a harrowing mommy experience. Not that I’m considering it…

It still gives me the shivers to think about your original post. Pretty sure he was just as fierce as Fineus!

  15. July 25, 2010 7:06 am

Even the box is awesome!! Glad to see you again!
